It's a nice piece.  We can see the layers of styrofoam accumulated during milleniums :)
Never attempted ond, but saw many diy instructions.  Quite a few on http://www.diyfishkeekers.com and http://www.dendroboard.com/.  Also this one http://www.instructables.com/id/3D-Aquarium-Background.

Been glancing those a lot recently because I want to make one for a paludarium.  Even bought a can of GreatStuff for practice purposes.

Funny you should post this - I was just looking at some backgrounds to rejuvenate the look of my 135 g cichlid tank and came across a few sites. Here's one DIY I found good:

Like the beer can!  :P
(and the  guy did an awesome job on the background)

I've made a few DIY backgrounds and they are A LOT of work, A LOT of VERY MESSY work. That being said they are pretty cool to look at. Did i mention that they are a lot of work? If I can find some pics or video I'll post them later.

Thanks for trying. I 've been thinking... why try to make somethign totally fake.. might have to wait till next year though... find a cliff and make a mold fromt he rock face... then use that to make the background.... using 2 part foam.

Might be worth it ... then coudl make 2-3 4... as people wnat them and make the original investment back for the mold making stuff??? Also have mold to make replacement if ever needed.
