First fully warm-blooded fish found

Scientists had always suspected there was something special about the big orange fish that live hundreds of feet deep, in some of the ocean's coldest places. Opah behaved differently than their sluggish co-inhabitants, who tended to be slow moving due to the low temperatures. Opah, on the other hand, had many features associated with quick-moving, active predators: lots of muscle and big eyes.

In a paper published last week in Science, researchers described the unique mechanism that enables these deep water predators to keep their bodies warm, and gives them a major competitive advantage over other fish.
