Scientists on a NOAA research cruise from Tahiti to Alaska report a decrease of about 0.025 units in pH in the Pacific Ocean, and attribute the greater acidity to the absorption of carbon dioxide produced by human activities. The evidence confirms computer models as well as other field studies. Acidity slows the growth of planktonic mollusks that are important food for many fish species, and other animals, including corals, and algae. As levels of dissolved CO2 rise, the biodiversity and productivity of the oceans will be directly affected. Submit new facts to the Webmaster |
