What type of auctions does OVAS hold and when are they?
Currently OVAS holds two different types of auctions.
- Mini-Auctions
During selected monthly meetings we will hold smaller auctions at the end of the meeting, after the main event and a social break. These mini-auctions usually have less than one hundred items and generally last about thirty minutes.
- The Giant Auction
The OVAS Giant Auction is traditionally held the first Sunday in March. The Giant Auction is our main fund raiser for the year. Upwards of one thousand items are auctioned in an almost day long event.
How do I register items for the auctions?
Watch ovas.ca for notification of mini-auctions and the Giant Auction. Instructions on how to register items for mini-auctions is usually provided a week before the actual event. Advertising for the Giant Auction occurs about a month before the event.
Preprinted labels for all items will be available from the auction chairperson before the start of the auction. Lot numbers will be assigned when items are registered and will be shown on the labels provided to you.
If you register an items and decide not to sell it, please inform the auction chairperson so the auction records can be kept up to date.
What can I sell?
You can sell almost anything fish related at our auctions. Used goods must be in working condition or if they are not, they must be clearly marked as to what is wrong or missing.
The minimum bid on any item is two dollars. If necessary, please group your items so that your lot can sell for this amount.
Certain conditions on number and/or types of items may apply to the Giant Auction – please see the Giant Auction information when applicable.
How much does selling an item cost?
OVAS charges a commission on each item sold. All funds received are used to provide programs and events for the club.
For mini-auctions the commission rate is 10% for all items registered before 4pm the day of the mini-auction. Items registered at the meeting are charged a 20% rate.
The Giant Auction rate is 25% for all items registered before 8pm the day before the auction. Items registered the day of the Giant Auction are charged 35% for OVAS members and 40% for non OVAS members.
How does bidding work?
The auctioneer will read the description of the item and the starting price. If you are interested in the item raise your hand. The auctioneer will increase the price until only one person is left in the bidding.
How do I pay for an item?
All items must be paid for right after bidding. We accept cash only, and we do not run tabs during any of our auctions.
