vvvwomp womp. it's called water changes. funny how they did not state how many fish & corals are in the tank. just 180 g of water and their calculations.

It's a coil denitrator.  People have been making these themselves and using them for years, and they work, so I see no reason why this shouldn't work just the same.  It's just already built for you.

If you Google for "coil denitrator" you'll get tons of hits.  The one big thing about them is that once they're working (it takes a couple months for them to come up fully) the water coming out is completely anoxic...so must be mixed back into the tank in a high-flow area.

I've got a DSB so nitrate removal isn't really a problem for me, but if you don't (or can't), then this is certainly a viable option.

Sorry...  Deep Sand Bed.  I have an area in my sump that's got quite deep sand in it...about 7", and it's deep enough for the lower reaches of it to become anoxic.  The bacteria that eat nitrate can only survive in an anoxic environment, so they live down there and eat up the nitrate that filters down to them.

Takes a couple months to become effective, but it works like a charm.  Just don't stir it up, or you'll kill the tank!

With fine sand, it would likely be enough, but with the larger grain stuff it wouldn't be.  It's not good to have anoxic areas full of hydrogen sulfide where your critters can stir it up.
