Title: Finally!!!!
Post by: omarh on August 04, 2010, 04:10:55 PM
Ok so finally after 3 months of research, saving and buying equipment bit by bit, my 90 Gal reef is cycled and ready to go!!!!
i will be posting pictures of my setup tonight when i get back home.

But here's the jist of things:
90 Gal drilled tank with two 1.5" drains
Spa Flex for overflow and 3/4" solid PVC for return.
33 Gallon sump with fuge
ASM G2 Skimmer
Two 300W Titanium Heaters
Mag9.5 Return

For flow , 4 Koralia Evos on a Wavemaster Pro
RKL to control my light and turn off skimmer during feeding.

80LBs of aragonite substrate and 120LBS of LR (mixed indo and totoka)

light is just temporary for now but using a Current USA Nova 4x54" soon to be replaced with a Tek Retrofit when funds become more available.

Stand was custom made by a cabinet maker i know,

I'm excit4ed to finally start putting some coral and fish within the next day or two!

stay posted for pictures to come!

Where was thise place? I bought my stuff at Lowes and it was priced well I thought. 1.5" true unions $15. All other parts and pieces great prices too. But those sound much better!

Lot of work and nice job of it looks great!

Where was thise place?

Mermaid pools, it's east of Aqua Valley, between Aviation Pkwy and Blair.  I got my 1 1/2" spaflex there as well.

The best prices for PVC are at the Lowes in Ogdensburg or HD in Massena.  The pipe is 1/4 of the price here in Ottawa.

BTW, nice job on the tank!

Very nice beginings!

One question...

How do you keep the water in the tank?

Is that white ribbon eel eating? I had a very hard time getting mine to accept any food.

he only eats live. he is still quite shy, comes out a lot more often nowadays. i still cannot put the feeders in and have him not hide in his rock. so i never see him eat but the feeder fish are gone by the time they swim behind his shelter.

you cannot feed saltwater fish, fresh water feeders it is doing more harm then good you need to try and get him to eat frozen by giving him silversides on a stick and wiggling it around as if it were live, also how do you know its not the lion that isnt eating the feeders?

also thats alot of fish and bioload to ad in less than 2 weeks regardless of how long the tank has been set up

I completely overlooked the lion. My money is on the lion eating the feeders. Tyler is right, feeder fish are not the greatest choice for feeding aggressive saltwater fish. You run the risk of bringing in disease that could potentially harm your fish. In addition they do not have any nutrional value that your fish ned. It would be like a human eating day old MacDonalds everyday. There is a great thread on reef central about feeder goldfish and why they should not be used to feed saltwater fish.

Mind you, I fed mine feeders for about three months before he finally learned to accept frozen food like silversides and krill. Now he'll eat pretty much anything I put in the tank. Very nice looking fu man chu BTW.

its basically like them eating fat and there liver cant take it and will die..its basically like poisoning them

lion and hawk are eating frozen just fine, it's the eel that is bothering me.
i know this sounds kinda silly but i'm assuimg the eel is eating the feeders because because i place them right behind his home and the lionfish is in plain sight. i dont see th elion eating them but they are gone........i'm trying my best to get him to eat his frozen foods, i wiggles the food in front of his home etc.... but no luck with that.

they only eat about once a week maybe twice so dont try to over feed him....dont give him anything for a week and then try the food on a stick and see how that goes

little update......last week the eel started eating the frozen krill off my feeding stick without any problems! i guess the little bit of starvation/acclimation to his new home was what he needed!!!

Nice!  I know how good that feels when they start eating....  My Achlies Tang is eating well, was about two weeks of him only eating greens... But I'm still not convinced he's in the clear... I holding my breath until he's been here for at least a year...

Gratz!  Takes a good deal of patience in this hobby, the rewards are there!
