Title: moon lights/LED ARE IN!!!
Post by: Seanc on January 03, 2006, 01:15:50 PM
Hi
i want to build a monlight sytem for my tanks, and was looking on ebay, and they have some packs of 100, for $6.01 including shiping.
i was wondering if anyone would like to buy some because i realy don't need 100 LED's. each one would be $0.05.
here is the link http://cgi.ebay.ca/5mm-x-50-pcs-7000-mcd-Ultra-High-Bright-Blue-LEDs_W0QQitemZ7577925797QQcategoryZ66948QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
thanks
sean

Well, I'll take some...although according to that link:

A) it's for 50 LED's, not 100
B) it's coming from Hong Kong...do you trust that?
C) $6.01 is $6.00 shipping, and the $0.01 starting bid...there are currently no bids, but 5 days left on the auction.  The actual price is going to be more than this.

i was looking at the wrong link when i wrote the last post. its 100 LED's,  $.09ea. its from the US, and has a buy it now, wich meens that it wont go up in price. there are also many listings, so there isnt only 10 hrs.

i can help you with powering them up, (i used to buy white leds in thousands from hong kong and they arrived b4 some US shipping - go figure) the bare leds will need mounting plugs to start with....then u need proper resistors, power supply and few other things and ofcrse some soldering!

jervais(on industrial) and active (on mrvale) are the east/west places where you should find everything....

i may have some mounting plugs/resistors which i could trade for some blue leds though!

ok we might have to order two lots.
I want 20-30 (or whatever is extra), that puts us up to 140( it would be best if i could get rid of more but its not a big deal). maybe we could also look into geting some resistors? if you can get them real cheep on ebay its worth a try.

i agree it is a good idea ToX

Post by: Seanc on January 03, 2006, 10:33:06 PM
ok so far we are at 130 lights. ( i will take 20 or however many are left over). wich meens that i will have to get another set wich is not a bad thing, it will be cheeper because of shiping.so if any one else wants any please speak up, i have to dicide weather to get another 50 or 100

does any one know how much resitors are here in ottawa? because if they are expensive, then i should just get a bunch of them too (they should be less on ebay). i'v seen alot of power suplys at princes auto, i don't think they are that much. 3-5$

ToX that is a great idea, and the ones who have done it befor should come and teach the rest of use how.

ps.they are actualy $.10 can. ea. because of exchange.

is $0.10 with shipping and all?

I'd be intrested in 20 rather than 10 if you are ordering another 100.

thanxs

we use to do this for car mods lol everyone that wanted to do a rear drum to disc conversion would go to this guys place and we all did it at the same time

Post by: Seanc on January 03, 2006, 11:14:01 PM
sounds good up too 140
also i think i might go with some slightly more exspenive LED's but more intence (ie:6000mcd vs 11000mcd). this will be beter i think for the deeper tanks, and i dont think it should hurt the shalower ones eather

i can show you guys how to do it, no problem at all!

not to scare you or anything but by the time its set and done, its going tobe not too cheap, but cheap enough!

i'd ask the supplier to provide the resistors.....they are cheap and the supplier always provide resistors if you only ask(something i learned about this hk ppl).

the things we need for the whole project:

leds
mounting plugs
resistors
wires
heatshrinks
heatgun
soldering stuff
little bit of patience

think i have all that maybe some extra! i'll take 35 btw, thanks.

here are the resisrtors i have found for the LED's. they work for a 12 V/DC power supply, with the brighter LED's.

http://cgi.ebay.ca/100-PIECES-470-OHM-1-4-WATT-5-AXIAL-RESISTOR-RESISTORS_W0QQitemZ7539925925QQcategoryZ73147QQssPageNameZWD1VQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

i have also bid one one of the sets of 50

Post by: FishBuddy on January 04, 2006, 01:51:57 PM
Seanc, on top of getting brighter LEDs, I think it's wise to get some that's in the 470nm wavelength as well as this spectrum is very close to the actual moonlight....  In the original ad which you've posted (from eBay), they didn't mention the wavelength so I am not sure what it is.....

Just a thought......

ToX, talking about car mods.....  I am not much of a mod myself, but I did upgrade a bunch of LED lights for my car and it looks really cool :-)  The one I especially liked is my license plate light as it is brilliantly white; not dim and yellow like a normal light  bulb....  I got it from this shop in HK as well and I have no defective bulbs so far....
Title: moon lights/LED ARE IN!!!
Post by: Seanc on January 04, 2006, 02:15:04 PM
they do say the wave length
if you go about half way down the page to

Typical Electrical & Optical Characteristics
at the bottom of that section it says
"Color TemperatureNA, Wavelength : 465-470nm"
wich is perfect, right?
Title: moon lights/LED ARE IN!!!
Post by: darkdep on January 04, 2006, 04:04:08 PM
I think 470-480 is the desired wavelength to match real moonlight...(could be wrong tho)
Title: moon lights/LED ARE IN!!!
Post by: jgolden on January 04, 2006, 04:32:12 PM
Yes, 470nm-480nm is the wavelength you're searching for in order to simulate real moonlight (desired for saltwater tanks). However, if you're building these for a freshwater aquarium, 465nm-470nm will be fine.

I would be interest in 20.

Found this information from www.ledwerx.com. For some reason it doesn't come up on the web. Good thig I printed it out. Example for a 10g - 4 leds, 25-30g - 6 leds, 50-90g 10 leds, 110-180 12 leds.
I also found this http://www.kaotica.com/frag/diy/moonlight/

ok
i'm bidding on 4 sets of 50 right now.
so every one that wants LED's wants resistors? i'm asuming that more people want resistors then people who don't, so anyone who does not want resistors PM me.

Also does any one know how much power supplys cost here in ottawa? is there a big difference bettween 12V and 6V?

thanks for the link BadTiming, i also found that when i was serching, ialso found this http://aquariumadvice.com/viewtopic.php?t=53270. it seems pritty good.
thanks

Sean,

Nice link...

Try digikey http://www.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Selection. You can order online with your Visa with next day delivery. Also Resistors.
The Source(Radio Shack) would likely have the parts.

Unfortunately, no. When CircuitCity bought out radio Shack, they stopped stocking stuff like resistors. If any TheSource stores still have any in stock, it's old stock left over from its previous life. That's why I had to go to Gervais Electronics.

Sad but true.

Don't know if there's a big difference between the 6V and 12V adapters or not, but as a sample of cost, the one at canadian Tire retails for about $14. http://www.canadiantire.ca/assortments/product_detail.jsp?FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=1408474396669708&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=1408474396670271&bmUID=1136511889446&PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524443276509&assortment=primary&fromSearch=true

oki got some 470 resistors, wich meens that you will need a 12V adapter, wich can be found at almost all electronic stores, and princes auto. i will put how much it will cost for an LED, and resistor in the near future.
