I think we've all seen a fish get sucked into filter intakes at one time or another, and with fry...it's more often or not.
I started taking old filter sponges, cutting a hole into them, and then putting them onto the filter intakes. Saves the fry/fish, filters out any large peices of food..plant..whatever...and keeps the filter upkeep to a minimum..not to mention easily cleaned in old tank water.
I got this after trying different netting, panty hose (clogs up too quick) and different things..
anyone else have a trick???
Actually used that trick on a powerhead output that was too powerful.
I think out of all the things I've tried..this is the best way.
I have tons of livebearers, and when they give birth every 2 days...there's tons of little ones in the tanks, this way, I don't lose any to the "masher" ;)
Don't forget you can also transform your filter to an undergravel filter for this purpose.
I use sponges over my filter aswell...

this is a great way to make them.....
Hey, I am using this technique right now for my undergravel jet system. I have a home-made sponge (from an Aquaclear 30) stucked at the intake of each of the Maxijet 900.. Works great and easy to clean.....
