Hey,

A pretty long time ago I had a stocklist for my first fish tank (33 gallon) drawn up, with some help from the OVAS forum. It went as follows:

1 Angelfish
2 Bolivian Rams
2 Banded Gouramis
10 Harlequin Rasboras
1 BN Pleco

I liked this stocklist but my favourite fish in it were the Banded Gouramis. I got the 10 harlequins and ordered the Bandeds a week later. They were supposed to come in a week after that at SuperPet but a month and a half later there is a problem with the supplier and it doesn't sound like I'll be able to get them.

Now I don't know what to replace the gouramis with. I never really liked the Bolivian Rams and I could do without the BN Pleco so here is the "base" stocklist:

1 Angelfish
10 Harlequins

The tank is a 33 gallon which already has the 10 harlequin rasboras and three Vallisnera Spiralis plants. There is nice-sized rock and a piece of driftwood for hiding spots. This means that any fish that go in this tank cannot be plant-eaters or ones that frequently dig up plants and they cannot be able to eat my harlequins.

What do you guys think I should stock it with? I can handle a bit of a challenge but I don't want fish that are incredibly sensitive either.

The fish have to be colourful, active, and somewhat peaceful and I want at least two more species for some variety.

Please give me as many suggestions as you would like and I'll be happy to give any information needed about the tank. Give the reasons to back up your suggestions.

Thanks ahead of time for your help.

GC,

If you want a banded gourami then you miight like the look of a Paradise Fish.  See a picture at http://www.watergardenersinternational.org/fish/Macropodus_opercularis.html  I saw a tank full of these at SuperPet Merivale on the weekend.  Of course my preference is an opaline gourami or a gold gourami.

You said you are not interested in a BN pleco.  I recommend something that will act as a scavenger (bottom feeder).  Cories are a good choice.  Popular types are the Sterbai cory and the Juli cory.  I have 2 julies in a 25gal that are doing well but they are social fish so more is better.

Good luck.

i agree with the cories, and maybe some ottos

as for more mid to top dwelling, maybe a pair of chocolate gouramis or another type? sparking it very nice

i'd almost be incline to ditch the single angel personally

could also go with some shrimp, amano or cherry
