Just wondering if anyone can post benefits of each..

i love the colour of africans.. but i love the size of Americans...

its a delemia..

i have driftwood and rocks..

My Tank:

65gal 48x15x20
200wat Ebo heater
XP2 filter
402 powerhead/quickfilter

let me know!! thanks all!!

artw

well you know which way I swing and why.

pegasus

Too bad! Art & I swing the same way. One non-obvious reason: If I cant dump 40 african fry on the Ottawa marquet, what would I do with 300 convicts?   :x

BigDaddy

Hey hey hey... give our south americans a break.

Name one african that you can actually call a pet.  Now, you talk to any Oscar owner...

Marx

can i fit 4 south american cichlids in 1 tank?

BigDaddy

Well, you couldn't put 4 oscars in a 65 no... but there are several cichlids from south of the border that you could house.  Red Port Acara's get to about 5 inches, Blue Acaras about 6, Firemouths too...

You have to decide what kind of aggression levels you want too... you'd never want to put a blue acara in a tank with a green terror for example...

Marx

I was hoping maybe jack dempsy.. and some compatible fish..

saltydog

I have Jack Dempsys & Severums for sale. You could have two of each (4 fish) for $8-12, depending on size. They are compatible. I keep both adults & fry together.

-thankful for a tankfull-

Aiglos

I don't know an Oscar owner that Wouldnt recommend an Oscar to an experianced fish keeper.

I love my Oscars

Marx

Would a male and female oscar live together?

BigDaddy

Sure... but in an aquarium twice the size of what you have.

Marx

lol.. i read that Oscars are semi-aggressive.. and can be mixed with other semi-aggressive cichlids..

could a jack dempsy or red devil go in a tank with a oscar?

pegasus

As you know, I'm an unconditional African lover. 5 years ago I came back to the hobby and restarted all my big tanks. My first fish was an Oscar, only because it has always been my dream to see a breeding pair. He was soon joined by my Africans. For three years, his companions were Aulonocara, C44, Zebra & Kenyi.

I miss my PET. If any one of you took him from the adoption agency (Big Al Kanata) fall 2003 (He had a hole in the head, just above the right eye)... could you give him a dog biscuit. He'll know it came from me.

Michel

PS  My XL Red Empress has no interest in jumping through the hoop, or wagging it's tail when I enter the room.
PS  I never got a second Oscar to make the pair.
PS  BigDaddy... you made me cry.
PS  Marx... Get a second tank!

BigDaddy

Marx...

A buddy of mine who owned an oscar had him alone in a 75 gallon tank.  I believe he had an amoured cat in their for clean up... but that Oscar needs all 75 gallons to himself.

As you can see... oscars can be great fish.  Don't let the fact that "its only one fish in that huge tank" be a deterent.

Marx

i really wanted 2 fish in the tank... :(

pegasus

You don't have to limit yourself to your pair of Red Empress. :)

saltydog

You can keep 2 Oscars in a 75G. I kept 3 Oscars plus 5 Tin-Foil Barbs in a 90G.
-thankful for a tankfull-

Marx

the dimensions are pretty much the same as a 90 except height.

48 long 18 wide..

Marx

also could i have 1 oscar and some catfish in the tank it doesn't have to be 2 cichlids?
