It would seem this is the case of a fish species that was loved to death.  According to this article, it has been caught so much for the aquarium trade there is almost none left in the wild.  Not bad for 6 months.

  Thats terrible! They are awsome looking little guys, but I hope that everyone will come to their senses and stop catching them for the trade. Maybe a select few breeders should get some to breed, but since they come from artificially made pools, it may be hard to replicate water parameters and whatnot. Sad to hear.
