Disaster finally struck

Well, it finally happened.  I guess a short power outage last week has finally done me in. I was away for a couple of days, and when the power came back on, only 50% of my fish room circuits came back on. From what I can determine, the GFI circuit that feeds my SW stuff likely tripped off when the power came back on and most of my reef system was without power for two or more days.  All three reef tanks spiked and it looks like very few if any of my coral will survive the shock, most of the fish died and aside from snails and hermits it looks like I am back to square one after 5 years of relatively trouble free SW success.

Oh well, time to start over again, I guess.

That's a nightmare, I hope I never have to experience.  Sorry to hear your run of bad luck, after 5 years in SW I'm sure you'll start up again.

RoxyDog

oh no Ron!  so sorry to hear. :(  let us know if you need any help with anything.
Tanks: salty nano cube, working on a fresh 125

Life is too short to wake up with regrets.  So love the people who treat you right.  Forget about the one's who don't.  Believe everything happens for a reason.  If you get a second chance, grab it with both hands.  If it changes your life, let it.  Nobody said life would be easy, they just promised it would be worth it.

That is terrible news Ron :'(

Like most people,  Ron's SW tanks were the inspiration for me to get started in the SW world.  The beauty and simplicity of his setups were truly inspiring.  And his willingness to spend literally hours talking and explaining things to a complete newb speaks even more to his character!

Let me know if there is anything I can do to help...

porcupinepuffer

Kinda weird reading this today, becuase lastnight I had my very first saltwater nightmare flood in my sleep. It just woudlnt' stop flooding and became a real catastrophe. When I woke up, I was so glad it was only a dream....
On another note, this is a reason why I hate GFCI, they're so easy to trip off. The sudden onslaught of everything trying to turn back on can make them trip right off... I just keep my stuff properly grounded and don't bother with that nonsense. Hope you can quickly get back on your feet, and thanks for the post.

Thanks everyone for your comments.  I will likely hold off doing anything extravagant for awhile.  The affected reefs now are looking more like LFS "live rock" holding tanks but I'm still hoping that some of the corals will stage a recovery (hoping but not all that hopeful).

I have been thinking of switching to a 48" by 18" footprint for my reefs so this will likely be when I do that. It fits well with my ongoing "reduce the number of tanks" activity which has my wife's total support  ;).

WRT the GFI I suspect that 'porcupinepuffer' is likely correct i.e everything coming back on at once was enough to trigger the GFI since that circuit has been loaded at close to maximum rated capacity in recent months.
