Electrique thermo

Hey i recently bought an electrique thermo. I like it more because of the simple display. But earlier today when i looked at it, it read 40oC i was in shock i had previously removed my heater because it kept at a steady temp. And my 5 gal needed it. So i freaked out and checked the temp with my hand. It was fine fel a litle warmer then room temp. So i take out the thermo to find that there was water in it. I left it out to dry but when i put back in the batterie it didnt work. So should i just go back to the normal cheap ones? Or get another digital one and screw the cap tighter?
