Can somebody help with the following question.
I often see in discussion Fx(Gx, WC) are used. With WC it is simple, but with other classification it is not so clear.
If I'm taking fishes from different sources then their offspring always F1?
Lets look at the example:
- Have a pair of F0
- Pick a male and female from offspring F1. Breed them
- Pick a male and female from offspring F2. Breed them
- Pick a male from offspring F3 AND use a female from ANOTHER source. Breed them
What are the offspring? :?:

I found a great site on the Internet that explains this very well, also there is an article on the CRLCA site but I can't get into it right now.  the following is paraphrased and may not be accurate.

well WC means wild caught.
F means filial,  which is latin for offspring so there is no F0.
G1 means Generation One from known wild parents
F1 means Generation One from unknown wild parents
etc etc.

counting higher than F2 is pretty much useless.

in retrospect the classification system is not clear when it comes to African cichlids.   on most sites you see any fry from wild parents classified as F1 but apparently they are supposed to be called G1 (generation one)  but the internet convention lists any fry from wild parents as F1 and it's hard to teach an old dog new tricks.

I will look at my book marks at home and cite my references.

Thanks for clarification artw!

But I still have some questions then:
- When I see F1 I could be sure that parent are wild caught?
- Wild caught also could be from one parent, it is hard to distinguish, so parents should be taken from different sources?
