Thanks for sharing.

Those last Picts are scarry.

Considering how the entire world is abusing and creating imbalances in nature and the natural order of things, I'm enjoying my simple reef tank as much as I can, because I feel that my grand children may never have the opportunity of seeing what I have seen and witnessed, on land and in the sea.

I'm old but here goes.
One sad movies scene come to my mind as I see the world being destroyed one bit at a time ( Soylent Green / I had to research this one for a while, it's old ), where Charlton Heston plays New York police detective in a simple future of 2022, his elderly father has decided that it was time to depart this crazy world, on his death bed he is granted one last wish, we see him being shown scenes of Nature evolving before his eyes on a large screen, his son ( Charlton Heston ) had never seen nature or it's beauty, but he remembers his father speaking of it time after time.

It's kind of ironic, but we may only be able to see nature on a large screen in the near future if the world doesn't wake up.

If you set politics aside, this is relevant.
Although it's more of a private political campaign than anything else that drove him to make this ( to win something else than the white house / his Nobel prize ), I do encourage everyone to watch the Al Gore Documentary " An Inconvenient Truth ", it should ring home at some point while you see the images and statistic develop before your eyes.

It is scary, and quite unfortunate.  The worst part is that we've dug such a large hole that it's going to take a LOT of people to get us out of it.

Just think of how much plastic you throw away each day.  It takes THOUSANDS of years for that plastic to degrade... And we unwrap our newspaper, pack our groceries, or unravel a candy for only 0-15 minutes of actual use.  Heck, we even wrap our garbage in plastic bags!  :P

Not only that, but have you ever tried to buy products that weren't wrapped in plastic, or at least wrapped modestly (ie. no excessive space, no multiple layers of plastic/bubble wrap/styrofoam)?  It's the hardest part once you've come to realize that things have to change... there's nothing to change to.  :(

speckledmind

It's not that hard.

First, don't be lazy, laziness is the back bone of our soscietety.
Second, is for people to take make a conscience effort and realize that we have simply asked to much from our planet.
Third, is to changes to the way we do things on a day to day life.
Fourth, make waves on all levels for things to change, and change it must.

Here are simple things to do, that can and will help everything on a short term.
- Groceries, Use paper bags it's offered, better yet, use the reusable bags that cost $1 a pop.
- Recycle as mush as you can, over load your bin until the message to offer larger ( or more ) bin comes along.
- Water, don't use it if it's not necessary, hosing down the asphalt is not a necessity, lawns and flower beds don't take precedent over nature.
- Showers, wash twice a day if you like, but keep them short.
- Shower heads and tap heads, use low pressure and energy saving devices, it will consume less water.
- Bottle water, stay away from it, those plastic bottle you use only pollute, there  is nothing wrong with tap water, in fact, consider yourself spoiled by having such abundance of fresh water, many countries don't.
- Electricity, going away for a vacation, turn of your hot water heater, you will save, so will we.
- Light bulbs and light fixtures, use lower Wattage bulbs ( 25 instead of 60 ), only turn them on when your in the room or need them, no one benefits from having an empty room lighted up.
- Light bulbs again, use energy efficient bulbs, they cost a bit more, but they sure work well.
- Paper, instead of printing your documents, save them in PFD.
- Demand paper that is not as white as what is offered, it's not necessary to have paper that is so white, it only pollutes our rivers.
Wondering how they whiten the paper, they use pure peroxide by the 45 foot truck load day in and day out, what you use in a pharmacies is only 3% to 10% and it burns, imagine what it does to our water streams, and no, it a myth that it all gets cleaned before going into our water ways.
You have doubts, no problem ! I invite you to drink the water that comes out of any Paper mill, try it ?

It goes on and on, and is quite simple.
You simply need to make a conscience decision about the way you go about life.
That's if you want life to continue.

Indeed!  And I whole-heartedly agree!  ^_^

I've got to start up a couple of composting barrels soon, too.  Does anyone know where to get products that are a little more environmentally friendly (I say that loosely), like paper bags made from bamboo and such?

I forgot.

By turning Saltwater a year ago I only do water changes once a month ( 5 Gal. ), instead of once a week ( 20 Gal. ), so I feel a whole lot better about that  ;)

As for my showers, I measured how mush water I use during one shower with a low pressure head, and I'm at approx. 3 - 4 gallons : ) per shower, and I shower twice a day  :)  love it.
I also lowered the temp on my water heater, and see no difference when I take my showers.

Thanks for sharing a very interesting yet sad pictures of the
reefs.
All I can say is "very sad how we humans are self
destroying our environment".Yet we can all play a small part
in our daily tasks by making changes on how we conduct
ourselves.

The hardest part is that some of the pictures have been seen by millions who don't care.
It is kinda scary that in the future tanks like our may be the last alive coral reefs in the world.........
