ANy one got an Idea who can make a tank rack like you see in the stores for stock? and generaly how much they charge? looking to get a unit made for my fresh water fish, and so I can keep more species without taking up the whole house

I made some myself using 2x4 lumber and used counter tops.  It is not show quality, but has been holding 1x10G, 2x15G, 1x20G, 1x29G and 1x40G for about 7 years now.  All of this on two levels.

It is in a bad spot to take pictures, but here is one.

The units you see in the stores are mostly made by MARS or DAS, they are not cost effective for personal use (They cost around $5000 for every 4' of tank).

The next best thing is to contact companies that deal with used racking from either warehouses or retail stores. Some stores use these with a facade on the front of the racking. They will need to know the weight per shelf (8' is standard but some carry 4') as that determines the size of the fixtures.

Your best bet would be to make one out of 2' x 4". It's not as attractive but it is much more cost effective and does the same job...

I was looking at getting my own tanks built with drilled gaps at the top so It's just like one tank but with deviders, would this work? I'm also thinking of trying to build a stand with baffles and everything, because It would be going in the computer room, so kinda a braging piece (since one of my SW is already in there)

I have couple of metal racks available for sale which I used in my fish room. Each have 3 levels and we can set the level based on our needs.  If you are interested pm me.

The other thing you might want to look at is the used furniture depots / government surplus stores around town.  I think there was one out on Industrial Ave?  Near the train station.

It's a crap shoot for sure, as they specalize in office equipment like desks and chairs...

Saltcreep

Probably too late but Canadian Tire in Kanata just got rid of tons of metal shelving. They may have some stored away somewhere. There are often great surprises at Cohen & Cohen too but you have to check frequently.

looks like I can still do the project after saving a bit of cash up but it has to be made smaller due to we live in a 100 year old house, floors not made to hold 1000 pounds lol, I think I will make a smaller one to start for my beta's making most tanks 3 or five gallons and putting in larger tanks for breeding and females, no more having to change bowl after bowl, and they will have more room,  Also, has anyone had experience with making tanks with slits in the glass dividers so less pumps are needed to circulate the tank?

What do you think after getting a small metal rack would be a good colour of wood to make baffles and frames? or for a project like this do I need the support of a metal frame?

Thinking about making it large enough to house about 12 males and two tanks for females and two bredding tanks

Throw some Ideas at me, I want to make this as intresting as possible. Thanks! :D

they come up for sale in the classifieds now and then. I saw some DAS racks in there not long ago. I think they came out of a Superpet.
