Whats the quitest filter to use?

So I have a 120 g tank with 2 over the tank filters (penguin biowheels)

I find them to be too noisy. they really arent that bad but this tank is in my living room and near my bedroom . so im hearing them all the time.

Im thinking of changing to a canister filter. are they better? wont i have to have an air pump and bublers?  I had all that b4 but found i got enough aeration with the filters alone.

so what brand and style is the quitest do you guys think? and most durable?

Since you mentioned you are running the Penguins, i`m suspecting it`s the splashing sound of the bio wheels that you are hearing?.
The cannister filters ( eheim in particular) will be quieter for sure, more so on a tank as big as yours, if you prefer the hang on filters , try the aqua clear line ( 110/500) for your tank size, others might have more suggestions.

If you are already thinking about it get an Eheim Classic - proven it be one of the most reliable and quiet filters and the best value for its price.

Whether an air pump is useful or not depends on your setup. It probably wont hurt if it is you cichlid tank; you will have to monitor the water quality and watch your fish to answer that question.

Other canisters claim to be quiet, but Eheim can't be touched.  They are worth their price.

I agree...I don't have an eheim YET, but that will be my next filter when the two filters I have kick the bucket You won't regret your purchase with an Eheim!

yeah, the biowheels splashing around are the main cause of the noise but so are the impellers, and the water entering the water.....

they really arent that bad, im just a really light sleeper.

Guess ill shell out the cash and get an eheim.....eh, i know they are good....just pricey.

I have been running a Rena XP for around five years. It is an excellent filter for the money. Made better than the Hydor or Hagen, they are a top quality unit at a fair price. The only negative thing people have found with them is if you install the media basket sideways and force the locking clips they brake at the mounting. Two people I know of from these forums have broken the clip on the main body doing this and it is costly to replace.

But overall the Rena XP is a top notch unit with a great self priming system. Five years of operation with never an issue gets the XP a 10 out of 10 in my books.

I been running a Marineland canister for a solid year with no problems either.. stackable baskets, and is praticaly self priming, and the disconnect is pretty simply and dosen't seam to be fragile either.  so thats my exsperince so far ,thank you
