I was thinking abojut using sand from the bed from my cottage lake for aquarium use. Does anyone know if this is good for cichlids or other tropical fish? Do I need to "cure" it somehow?

I've done it many many times. If the the water from the cottage is clean, it should be safe. Wash it really well. If you can boil it it would be better. If you just put it in your tank, you'll probably end up having some sort of little "bugs" in your water. This may be a bad thing.
