RTN or STN Experience

I think I have RTN... I came home yesterday to find the bottom 1/3 of my purple tip acro totally bleached.  I don't think it is bug as the flesh is hanging, etc.  I fully expect to have the entire coral bleached when I arrive home tonight.  I was lucky as it has affected my least favourite coral and I don't really care to save it.

Does anyone have any experience with rapid or slow tissue necrosis?  Any suggestions for my tank and/or other corals?

I have heard cases of this happening sometimes due to new addition to phosban media in the water column (too much used - to soon)

Not sure if this helps. Check Reef Central as there is allot of info on this.

Ive experienced it for several causes...

Temp increases
ALK swing (right now.. argh)
High Organics
Red Bugs

The only way to get rid of it, is to remove the cause and keep things stable... It sucks...  Hope you do not lose anything in the process.

I had not noticed until too late, but my temp had swung up to 85  :-[

I had it back down to 78 this AM, and think I have it under control.

I suspect that was the biggest contributor, my alk swung a little from a water change but only from 8'sh to 9'sh.  I don't "think" it is bugs, time will tell on that one.

I lost the entire piece in just 3 days.  I now have this awesome bleached piece in my tank which stands out like a sore thumb ;)

So far, nothing else appears affected.  If all I lose is the purple tip acro I will concider it a success.  The purple tip was my least favourite and would have sold it had I though someone would have bought it.  When they say purple tip, they don't say 80% brown :D

Rest in piece PTA, lesson learned.
