I recently went and got some take out at the chinese restaurant Full Start on Bank/Hunt Club Street.  They don't have good "chinese" food take out restaurant like that one in the market.

They redid their 100+ store aquarium to house a mini freshwater stingrays.  Which got me wondering where I could get:

1) a freshwater stingray

2) best place to get a custom tank to make it longer and wider as oppose high.

SP Barrhaven has one for 300$ which is freshwater, and SP Kanata has one which is brackish (not sure the $).

To let you know... Quite often the smaller varieties of sting rays are harder to keep than the ones that get a bit larger. Then again, they're quite often considerably smaller as well.

Right now Super Pet Barrhaven has a couple of stingrays in. One is a teacup stingray, Potamotrygon reticulata, ($188 I believe) and the other is a motoro stingray, Potamotrygon motoro, (~$380 I think).

The cool thing about stingrays is you could have them in the bottom and other fish higher in the tank. The SP Barrhaven display has stingrays in the bottom and needlenose gars on the upper portion. I also know of someone with rays in the bottom and discus/angels in the middle and it works out for her.

Hope that helps some.

Cheers!

I think it's a great combo, personally. Just have to get the right substrate in there and all is good.

This information is not correct... SP Kanata has a Motoro ray, which is freshwater.  Its price tag is at $300.

We had a teacup (also freshwater), it was $100.

What is the dimension of the Julie's aquarium in which she has the stingray.

Why is my spidey sense tingling.

That's right.  I don't have room for another aquarium.

I was at SP Barrhaven a few days ago and I swear the price was 300$.. - as long as someone knows!

Hi guys and Dr. Phil, I considered a tea cup a while back but didn't get one.  I did do some research and the moto rays are apparently hardier than the teacup.
I believe JBL has rays with his Discus but I'm not sure of the size of his tank.

Well I was wrong about the price of the ray at SP Barrhaven- it's infact $388.88

I can always dream :D

Sting-Ray

I purchased one about two months ago - a hystrix ray (sold to me as a motoro).

Here is an idea of the size factors ...

Stingrays mature at a variety of sizes. The smallest growing Rays are P. hystrix, P. scobinae, and P. reticulata. They max out at around 12 inches in disk diameter. Reticulatas have a very long tail however, so can be 12 inches of disk plus another 12 inches in tail! P. orbignyi and P. humerosa max out at around 14 inches and also have very long tails. Of course, there are exceptions to every rule and I have heard of individuals growing larger than average. P. motoro is next in line, maxing out at about 18 to 24 inches in diameter. The other common types, P. leopoldi, P. henlei, P. castexi, and P. menchacai, all max out at over 30 inches in diameter!

Rays can be raised in smaller tanks, but the tank must grow with the fish. Once the Ray becomes as long (including tail) as the tank is wide, then it's time to upgrade! This can take a while depending on species and certain individuals. One of my P. motoro went from 4 inches to 12 inches in diameter in about a year. That is phenominal growth for a Stingray. Others grow much slower. Just pace your specific Ray's growth and you will know when it's time to get a new home.

Perhaps the perfect enclosure for a Stingray is an indoor pond. Rays are best viewed from the top anyways. Unfortunately, if you can only see them from the top, you can't witness the awesome activity of climbing up the sides of the tank. It is very entertaining. I am currently constructing an 8ft x 5ft pond for my Stingrays and Arowanas. Schematics and in depth directions will be available on this website once construction is complete in 2004.

Also keep in mind that rays require near perfect water quality especially the reticulata (No nitrates, no nitrites).

I can just imagine the fascinating behavior by stingrays.

I remember when I went snorkelling in Belize looking for sharks.  We found  a flock of about 40 big stingrays.   Of course, in the midst of the stingrays where six foot nurse sharks.

hehehehehehehe

I got more scare of the stingrays than the shark.  Especially when I believed I notice the alpha female getting into her defensive posture to protect the young ones.

I was like get me back on the boat.

Which is the opposite reaction you get because they sense fear and it only escalated the situation.
