So i've heard many people saying they buy there discus in montreal! I have two questions are first is; where in montreal do i buy them? and second how to get them back home to ottawa safely? (long drive)

Mmm... living in Montreal myself, I love the selection of aquatic stores here!

The best two places for quality and selection are Nature Pet shop and Big Als, both on the west island. Big als is in the Megaplex (really, it's not so mega) on the corner of the 40 and sources boul. Nature is in complex point claire (I think that's the name of the mall - it's across the street from Faireview Mall).

There's also another store, with almost as much selection further east in the city called Aquarius (www.aquariusweb.qc.ca) located at 2347 Jean-Talon east. They've got the best showroom of aquariums and stands (though they are not filled) that I've seen yet.

Sliding down the list, but still worth checking would be the Amazon pet shop on the south shore in Brossard. The Amazon shops in general dont stock as much variety as the aforementioned stores, but the Brossard location is the best of the lot. They are in the dix30 shopping complex (shopping city? seriously, it's at least 6 blocks of nothing but malls and stores). Conveniently located at the intersection of highways 10 and 30 (dont ask how 2 highways that both run east-west and _should_ be 20 km from each other intersect!)

These are the worthwhile stores I have located. If anyone else knows of some really good ones in the Montreal area please add to the list :)

Whoops, forgot to add. Most of these locations can fill the bags with oxygen, and as such the fish will easily survive a trip to Ottawa - even if you stop for lunch/dinner somewhere and it's not too cold out.

crazy 4 fish

i have bought fish in Ottawa a few times and brought them back to Montreal with no problems. it's not as long of a drive as you think

Soeman, Thank you for the great info.  I suspected there must be good places to "hit up" in Montreal.   8)

As far as the the thread topic goes, many people have recommended that I check out a place called Luckies in Markham.  I can't speak to their stock, but I m told the prices are pretty good.

I currently have a decent tank of discus, all purchased here in Ottawa, at various times in the past 10 months...from the two BA stores.  Some of the fish are quite extraordinary, but several all also very disappointing...( growth rate etc...)  I have found that you can get some nice Discus locally, but they are always on the expensive side and you need to watch the tanks for a while to make sure you can identify the "good ones"

If you feel like making the trip, go to Luck Aquarium in Markham.  You can't beat the quality or the prices on discus IMO and they'll haggle with you if you're getting a few.  It's in an Asian shopping plaza next to The Pacific Mall.  I get fish from them every time I'm in the area.  I pack a styrofoam box in the car so anything I buy can be transported home safely.  I've never bought discus but they'll be fine in a bag in the box.  Just think about what they have to go through to get to the shops.  Most discus come from Singapore or Hong Kong...atleast the good ones.  Compared to that trip, a few hours in the car back to Ottawa will be a piece of cake!

Make sure to set up a drip system to acclimatise them to your tank when you get home.  Markham or Montreal water is quite different than ours and that's the best way to get them used to the change.
