Outside, in a bucket with a garden hose. Keep filling it, mixing the sand around and letting the water overflow. When it runs clear it's done. I've been at it for a good part of the afternoon with crushed coral gravel - what a pain! I don't hink I'll ever get the stuff clean.

Bathtub, taps on FULL, bucket half full, and swirl swirl swirl, digging deep down, until the water runs clear,

I prefer to use a hose as well, but the bathtub is a close second for those of us in an apt.

I used a ratty old cotton pillowcase to rinse mine (the more threadbare the better!).    :D

I filled it up about a third of the way with sand and then ran water through it with a hose... I was just a little cloudy when I first filled the tank, but not nearly as bad as the time I setup a tank and didn't know that sand had to be rinsed first...that one took four whole days to settle!

With crushed coral, you can rinse it forever, and you will never get it clean because it keeps disintegrating while you are cleaning it.  All you can do is rinse it once or twice, and then put it in your tank.  The cloudiness will disappear in a few days, and won't harm your filter.

Try doing only 1/4 of the a bucked at one time !!...its so much easier, and you`ll do a quicker and better job !!...   John P
