Quote from: "darkdep"hehe ah Oscars...I was thinking of setting up a tank under my kitchen sink and putting some oscars in it as a DIY garbage disposal...

Haha. That's awesome!

I love my oscars. And would never dream of getting rid of them. In fact, I wouldn't mind getting a huge 200+ gal tank and getting even more than the two I have... Might build myself a plywood tank, actually.

Thanks everyone for your warm welcome and support for helping me enter this hobby. I will definately ask questions as they come up and take whatever advice you give me.

RIght now, after reading all the comments about starting with a bigger tank, I think i will invest into a 20+tank. Are there any suggestions on where I should look? Anyone have used ones to sell? I guess, most important of all, what are some recommended online resources?

darkdep

If buying new, you could always go with a "kit" that the stores sell to get started easily.

A 20gal tank, by itself, is $38.00 new from Superpet.  Just for reference.

For a tank of that size, a Penguin Biowheel filter would be awesome.  They're only around $30-$40 new, and I'm sure you could find one used easily enough.

For easy cheap light, get an Incandescent hood and throw two Phillips daylight 13w compact flourescent twisty bulbs from home depot in it.  (That is only one of about 1000 ways to light your tank tho).

Some substrate.  Easy answer is aquarium gravel...everyone on this board has extra and would sell it to you cheap.  Pick a colour you like, that's it.  You can also look to do various types of sand.

Decoration?  Absolutely up to you.  Pick your fish first, tho.

You will need a heater.  SP Kanata has a 50% off sale on some heaters right now, you'll only need about a 100w one for 20gal.

Get some Dechlorinator for treating your water.  Get a couple of buckets for water changes and a gravel vacuum.

Pick your fish.  X=)

slick_jing, is that a plate of deep fried fish   you're using as an avatar :?:

darkdep

I love his avatar.  Although, in fairness, you should change it.

When you lose your first fish, you'll feel bad.  X=)

Marc

I think the avatar shows a keen and twisted sense of humour.

Underwater

I like his avatar.

Mine is sort of a joke, too, but it's subtle.  Everyone uses pictures of fish they own in their avatar, so I thought it'd be funny to put a pic of the loch ness monster.  It kind of fits my name too.  Maybe it was just too subtle  :?:

Anyway, kudos on the avatar, very creative

darkdep

It was very subtle...I didn't even know what that was until you told us.  Now I really like it!!

Mettle

I dig the fried fish avatar!

So... can I assume since you haven't responded to my reply to your pm that the tank you're considering isn't mine :?
