Cleaning canister filter hose?

The intake and outake hoses on my eheim canister are full of "gunk" what is the best way to clean them?

I use one similar to this

I use it from both ends of the tubing & the odd time when the tubing is too long i drop a weighted line through the tubing & attach the other end to the flex brush.
