Eheim filter sale and they can't ship to Canada

I'm slowly getting my parts together to move up to a larger aquarium setup (looking to go for a 150g). I found a great deal on Ehiem filters at www.drsfostersmith.com. The 2028 Pro II kit is going for $179.99 (they're $489 here). Here is the URL if your're interested:  http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=10946&N=2004+2032&js_enabled=0

The drawback is that they don't ship to Canada. I like to support my LFS and tend to shop locally when I can, but a deal like this is kinda hard to pass up - especially considering the $300 price difference.  I don't mind spending the extra money to keep my local businesses going, but that kind of markup seems extreme to me.

My question is, has anyone here ever setup a mailing address in the US to pickup packages (like a mailboxes etc. or something along those lines?). Is it worth doing? Can it even be done as a Canadian?

Thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike,

Really easy to do...  contact Michael Lira at the UPS Store in Ogdensburg, New York. They are just over the border, and will receive packages for you sent to your name at their address for a small service fee. Their phone number is (315) 393-1188.

Best, Ron

WOuldn't that $180 be in American funds making it $215? Still a big price different from what they sell them here. Just saying is all. :D

darkdep

Plus shipping, plus service fee, plus possible customs charges.

Sorry, Mettle started it!!   :D

Thanks Ron, I'll give them a call to see what the service fee would be. Even factoring in the exchange, shipping and gst at the border (no duties to pay from what I've been able to find out), it still works out to a great deal overall - just about 1/2 price all told. If I could get it for a halfway decent price here in town, I'd jump on it.

This thread has raised a question: Are there any good fish stores in Ogdensburg?  Does anyone know of a website?

Correct...no duty, but expect to pay GST + PST on the Canadian value.

If you really think about it.........you will still save a substatial
amount of money shopping at U.S retailers.
I have bought many things at  U.S.A retailers and even with fees and currency exchange I still have save over 45%
of the cost of canadian retailers.
So if you're thinking of shopping at U.S retailers and specially being into the fish hobby category.........ask them if they ship with U.S post even with extra insurance.I have done it before
even thought they have say No shipping to Canada.
cheers.

Update: They're not selling the 2028 kit anymore (they're completely sold out), now it's just the filter. The original kit also included 1l of ehfimec, 4l of substrat pro, and the installation sets (worth over $100 priced separately). Unfortunately they haven't adjusted the price.

I guess I should have jumped on it when I had a chance...  I guess I'll wait until I've actually bought the tank before buying the filters.(besides, that 180g dual overflow is tempting me more and more... - Darkphreak, you're an evil, evil man... ).

Hi guys, in Montreal there is a store selling ASTRO CANISTER FILTERS 2212 for less than a 100$ (medias are sold separately) they are a perfect replica of an eheim filter, I own 7 eheim pro II 2028 and 2 astros 2212 and 1 astro 2208, all I can say is that they are working really good, I cannot see a difference between the two types.
