Hi

My system crashed while I was on holidays. I'm taking the opportunity to build a new, bigger system.
I was wondering what the rule of thumb is when It comes to live rock. 1lb or 1.5lb per gallon?

I would also like to know who has nice live rock at a great price.
I would assume for a 90g I would need at least a hundred pounds.

i have almost finished cycling my 56gal FOWLR and started cycling my 90gal reef last week.
i went by the 1lb /gal rule for the Fish only  but i splurged on teh reef i went with 120lbs. so ya, 1-1.5lbs per gallon is where you should be at generally but the more the merrier it's just a matter of cost and where to put it all!

Where did you get if from Omarh. How much did you pay? Did you get a better deal buying it 120lbs at once vs. buying it 20lbs at a time?

I guess then I will be buying 135lbs...

Cheers

Buy the eco dry rock from BRS as 75% of your total rock volume and then just seed a few pounds of live rock into your system.

You'll save big bucks and cut your cycle down big time... granted your biofiltration buffer will NOT be able ot handle a full load right away but you'll be able to put something in your tank at least.

my 90 has 120lbs in it and I think that's perfect, very porous and you can create some great structures.

If I could do it over again i'd overload the sump with rock and create more of a minimal bonsai type display of crushed smaller rocks.

i got my first 56 lbs from BigAl's.......HUGE MI$TAKE.....at7.99 a lbs.
Now, the other 120 i paid 275$ from a local classified add. The rock was BEAUTIFUL with TONS of coraline and life on the rock so i picked that up quick things.
Now alternativley, Ray's or Aquavalley have some decent prices on LR. something on the ranges of .4.6$ a lbs but best to call them and check them out. (look at the local sponsors page for their contact info)

Talk to Jim at forty fathoms, he has some beautiful rock and the prices are really good.. he is down in gan but if i recall correctly he is up in ottawa a fair bit so you might be able to arranage a drop off or something with him.

Wow,

Some people just assume that there is a problem.
My first post said my system crashed, and that I will be building a new one.
It was a faulty heater that stayed on for a week...boiled everything. Luckly there was no livestock in the tank.
But instead of asking what went wrong or what happened people assume that you don't know what you are doing.

I may only have 25 posts but I've been in the hobby for 11 years now. I been doing this when there were no sponsers & when the only places to shop were Big-Als, Marinescape and others out of town.

I wanted input on the rule of thumb for how much rock and I wanted to find out who had the best price on live rock.

I'm driving to Toronto this weekend for a wedding and will be picking up at least a hundred pounds of Fiji premium live rock from one of the local shops that is going to let me have it for $3.75 a pound. He said that he normally lets it go for $4.25 on a 100lbs, but because I'm coming from out of town he will lower it.

Thanks all who PM'd me and replied to my ad, I mean post and thanks toJim for hooking me up.
Does anybody want me to pick them up some? I can probably fit another 50lbs or so inside my car.

Hey dude I assumed nothing you said it crashed. You said you were adding more rock back. It was a friendly suggestion. Never thought you knew more or less than me or anyone else. Just trying to encourage you. I am always open to advice and critism from anyone. I never assume by any one's post count what they know or not.

I am 8 months into the saltwater side of things hands on. Been researching it for 2 years b/c I was afraid I would crash a tank and kill liecstock plus waste money. I appreciate very much when folks help me.

So never intended to insult you or anyone else. If you took it that way sorry like I said just trying to help one hobbyist to another and be friendly.

I'm sorry to hear about your crash..

Rule of thumb: all rules of thumb are useless.

Watts/gallon or lbs/gallon or gph/gallon are all useless.

Go with enough rock to complete your aquascape, nothing more.  Then match the bioload to that amount of lr and consider your other filtration devices...  If possible, add a sump with more lr for even better filtration.
