I'm rebuilding my aquarium stand, and as an added feature, I would like to install a lamp that automatically turns on when I open the door, and turns off when the door is shut.

Where can I find and/or build this ?

you can get a button relay at any hardware store. Simular to what a fridge or dryer uses.  The door closes and pushes it in to off position and then when open light comes on.  Another reference would be like your car door or truck.

Cheap and easy to install

How about those contact strips for alarm systems?

Depending on how much light you want, small LEDs might do it. I bought a package of ten quite a while ago (sorry, can't remember where) and they're kind of designed for this. They stick on the edge of the door opening with two-sided tape and a small metal strip sticks on the back of the door. As long as the light and the strip are close to each other as when the door is closed, the light remains off. As soon as the strip moves away from the light, it comes on. You could use as many as you want to get the light level you need. I have five of them I'd happily give you although, they may need new button batteries. Problem is, I don't live exactly close to downtown and I'll be out of town starting Wednesday. I could leave them here with someone if you want to pick them up. Price is right. Pic attached.

@Saltcreep:  I've seen those at the dollar store, didn't get them because I assumed that for 1$, they'd be so lame I would need 100 to get .5 lumen out of 'em  :D  I guess I was wrong.

I think I got these at XS Cargo. They were very inexpensive but seem well enough made - they each have two white LEDs in them. I used two in a supply cabinet in my fishroom. Worked quite well actually.
