It encompasses a lot of things.  Broadly, where is the fish found and what other organisms does it share an ecosystem with?  There are several main zoogeographic realms (eg. Holarctic, Nearctic, Oriental, Tropical, etc.).

Essentially, where does the fish live both on a geographical scale and on a niche scale. But like paleofishgirl said, it encompasses alot.

Nearctic is basically most of North America other than Mexico, including Greenland.
