Plant Help, black hair like growth

I am new to live plants and some of my plants have some black hair like algae growing on it? Is it algae and what do i need to do to get rid of it?

If it is black and small strands tightly formed together then you have BBA, black brush algae.

Where is it, how long have you had it, how big a tank do you have, what kind of lighting is on it and for how long, and what kinds of fertilizers are you using?

its on a sword plant, been like that  for 2 weeks, its in a 12 gallon... its a 13 w flourscent, its an eclipse system. I haven't used a fertilizer but the plants have some good new growth.
What can i do?
