25 Gallon question

Good morning everyone,

Just got my hands on a used tank.  The measurements are 30 1/4in x 12 1/2in x 16 3/4in.  I used a online volume calculator to find out it's a 25 gallon tank but most of the charts and tables online seem to indicate the "standard" 25 gallon tank is 24 1/4in  x 12 1/2in  x 20 3/4in.

So do I have an "unstandard" tank size? I'd rather have a longer tank than a taller one but I'm curious about it... Maybe the 25 gallon is like the 20 where you have a "tall" and a "long" version?

I was hoping to establish and maybe breed a pair/harem of apistogramma cacatuoides in there and I think it would be a great size, what do you think?

  Any insight on this tank?

  Thank you,
  EB

It sounds like a taller version of the "standard" 20long. There are lots of 30inch wide tanks out there.

You should be able to keep a pair if not even a trio of apistos in there; cacatuoides are not as aggressive towards each other than other apistos.

Thanks for the reply.

I wonder why I can't really find any info on that particular size... probably not so popular. I think it's a great size though. Basically just like a 20 gallon tall but with 6 extra inches in length.

Yeap, it's an ok size for apistos. For a bigger group you would require more footprint. "Standard" size or not doesn't really matter unless you try to find a hood or stand. It's probably better to speak of uncommon dimensions. I have seen some interesting sized tanks that we unfortunately seldom see in the stores.
