I have 2 females with a "lump" so to speak under their mouths that are constantly doing a chewing motion. Would they be holding by any chance?

sas

Certainly sounds like it.
Can you post pics?

Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't these fish mouth brooders?

Yeah they are mouth brooders. By lump I mean it looks like they have a mouth full causing a "lump" between the jaw bone. I tried to take a pic, but they are scared to death of saying cheese. They must be lactose intolerant.

I remember reading an article a while back about an aquarist who was concerned his african cichlid had a disease because it had a lump on its mouth. When he quaranteened it he learned the lump was actually a group of fry.

Definitely holding!

Give them a few weeks and you should have a bunch of fry. Usually takes about 3 depending on how long she's been holding without you noticing.

Lurch1

Good good.
I will try to get a pick when I get home around midnight. Catch em' off gaurd. Now here is my next question. I slipped in the possibility of getting another 10 gal fry tank at dinner and my wife almost had a stroke so would it be possible to raise them in one of those net box things that stays inside the main tank?

sas

Congrats on the spawn!
So you have a few options,1. Don't do anything and depending on your
tank setup, you may have some fry survive, great way to let parents learn
their parenting. They will spawn again.
2. Remove mom from the main tank and put her in a separate tank by herself and wait til she spits on her own. She will periodically take the fry back into her mouth
until she knows they are ready to be on their own.
3. Strip her and raise the fry in a separate tank.
You could raise fry in a breeder net but depending on what fish you have in the main
tank they could become food. Fish eggs/fry are an irresistible food.

If you do choose to strip her of the fry, you'll want to wait at least a couple more weeks until they're fully developed.... stripping her when they're free swimming makes life a lot easier.

Agree with ^^
Definitely a separate tank or they'll become lunch in no time.

Can I put them in a net breeder until the spit the fry out and raise the fry in the net breeder?

Just a warning.
If you keep the fry then you end up getting another tank.
You get more fry and the size is different so you get another tank.
Pretty soon you get like me with about 18-20 tanks.
I even have fry sitting in a bucket with an air stone.
You could leave the female in the tank with lots of hiding places for the fry and maybe a couple will survive.  They will always be more.
If you can't have more tanks then the best thing might be to let nature take its course.
Good Luck.

Lurch1

Here are some pics, best I could do. Sorry.

Wouldn't that be wonderful! lol.

sas

Looks like she is holding, and the one behind looks like
she might be holding as well, although the pic is a bit
fuzzy.
Congrats as limmer says you'll soon have umpteen tanks :).
