How to keep floating plants from getting stuck behind HOB filter

Anyone have some good ideas for preventing floating plants from getting trapped/stuck under the lip of the HOB filter where the water flows out?

Some research online has produced a few ideas:
-setting up a baffle using a cut up water bottle
-create a barrier of some sort with suction cups, fishing line and floating tubing

I used air tubing and created a lasso and put all of the floating plants in our QT tank in that and it seems to be working ok, but isn't very pleasing to the eye.  I wouldn't care except that there isn't much light behind/around the filter so I don't think its doing them any good.  I would rather them just float around!

Any good ideas out there?
