Is it safe to just switch salts?

Hey marc
With salt changes it is highly recommended to do it
Gradually. Many years ago I did a complete salt change only
To Kill all my corals-- guess it has been a learning process .
But gradually is the key.

NO you def want to do it slowly you need to acclimate it. Same reason why we dont get fish from the lfs and throw them in the tank, that being said if you are doing 10% water changes I dont' see why you cant use new salt, the ratio would be 90-10 pretty much the same as drip method in my opinion

+1 to what Darth said.
I switched from Instant Ocean to H2Ocean Pro+. I didn't do anything special. Just finished up the IO and started using the H2Ocean in my 10% water changes. I saw no negative effects what so ever. I did see positive though. The corals are much happier with the H2Ocean.

It depends on how much water you change...

When I switched from RC to RN i just did it... my changes are at 15% total water volume... no issues...

Think about your params, which are only critical for SPS anyhow... but say your alk is at 8 and you switch to something that has alk mix of 11dkh... 80% of your water is at 8dkh and 20% of your water is at 11dkh... so you have to do a weighted average which would be about 8.6% after your water change... acceptable for sure on SPS systems, and kind of irrelivant on LPS/softy systems IMO.

While I agree you cannot hurt your system by doing a mixed approach will not cause problems, just doing 10-15% water changes will not cause issues either.

Im switching from IO to TM bio actif on a 38 gal. im in the process of adding the sump first with the remaining IO, then after that im gonna do 10% water changes of TM. im gonna do 10% first week, 15% two weeks after, 25% two weeks after that my normal water changer are 25% every two weeks.

I'll keep you all posted.

Thanks for all the help!
