Hey everyone,

Was just curious on how "community" a beta fish is (Yes that same one from the BBQ). I know 2 in the same tank will fight, but how are they with others? (like swords/guppies) I was thinking about starting up a 25g fresh for my little one and giving the poor beta more room to live instead of exist. Or woud I be better to leave him in his small home?
Cheers

I've kept a betta with neon tetras with no problems. I've also seen a betta in a community tank with mollies and corys. Oto cats and small plecos are probably okay as well. I also wouldn't keep them with any fin nippers like tiger barbs or aggressive fish like cichlids or angel fish.

Another thing is that from my experience they don't like a strong current. In the wild, they can survive in just puddles of water!

Hope that helps - maybe others can chime in!

I've had no issues keeping betas with other fish, one alone with other fish is not an issue. At first the betas usually need time to adjust but I find they do really well, even living longer in a community tank than they would on their own. I find they're too slow to be able to do any damage to faster moving tetras, rasboras etc. I've even had them with angel fish, with no issues.

I kept one in a community planted tank for years and David usually has them mixed in with rasboras in his shop, vs. keeping them in tiny cups.
I haz reef tanks.

I will add that guppies may not be an ideal tank mate for Bettas, there is a good chance the Betta will look at the male tail fin of a guppy as one of their own.
