A newbie here.

Anyone know where i can get 100% silica sand  in ottawa. I want it for my new 50g tank.

I went to Home depot , found they got " All purpose Sand" and very fine " play sand". I believed someone said play sand is not good before.

Comments and suggestions are welcomed.

Go to Mermaid and get some pool filter sand.

Alternately you can get silica sand at Merkley Supply on Bayview Rd/Scott Street.

thanks for the help. :)

What kind of color the sand is ?

I heard that the sand can not be more than 3/4 inch deep. If I put some big rocks on the sand, is that dangous to the bottom of the tank?

Thanks.

Stevie

The pool filter sand that I bought at Mermaid is a mixture of white/beige/brown/reddish/black grains.  It's a larger grain than play sand and looks great.  Doesn't seem to compact either.  Comes in a 50 lb. bag for $7.95.

It is true what they say about 3/4" deep sand beds.
rocks will not hurt the bottom of the tank. just make sure pointy sides are not sticking into the glass.
you might notice your silica sand will eventually turn green or brown with algae.   so you might want to investigate various sand dwelling loaches/mts snails et al

Place eggcrates before making the rockwork. It may help.

Best to place the rocks on the glass & sand around them. This way the rocks cannot be shifted by borrowing animals & your rockwork will not fall down, possibly injuring some of the fish.
-thankful for a tankfull-

Home Depot's "Decor Sand" is also 100% silica.
