hey guys i was wondering what i could do aboutthe water in my tank its clear an the fish are healthy but the water smells like crap literally i dont know why either i did 2 60 % water changes in the last week and a half to hope in killin the smell but no luck any ideas ???

Evan

Activated carbon will take some of the odour away if you are not already using it.  (Assuming you can use it)

Depending on what is in your tank it could cause the smell, example driftwood can rot, as well as plant roots if you have live plants.

Also wiping down the sides and vacuuming under any decorations (If possible) to make sure you get all the waste out of the gravel.

It will likely take more than a few water changes to lose the smell.

yeah rotting plants DEFINATELY can smell pretty nasty..sometimes your filter can also smell bad, and if you have any dead rotting fish you haven't noticed, that can REALLY smell bad.. all this I have learned from experience

activated carbon seems to work well for me.  I don't recommend 2 60% water changes in 1 week though....that is a large amount of water and can cause alot of stress on the fish.

well its a 100 gallon tank with 2 oscars 1 ajck 1 convict an 1 pleco there is no live plants or drift wood in the tank an all of my filters are less then 1 month old would it be that the bateruia colonies arnt established in the filters ???

Julie

Are you feeding live food?  A good vacuuming would pick up any leftover rotten pieces of food.

StylinT

nope they are only gettin high quality pellets an the odd criket every now an then thats all

ambushman2j

crickets can stink pretty bad if they are not eaten completely..I know when water meets crickets at the store, it's a nasty combination

StylinT

nope they eat every last piece of them an what they dont eat the jack an the convict clean up the scraps
