I was just wondering, are we planning on doing superex again?

Marc

Hey Drew,

The club isn't doing anything at the super-ex this year.

Marc

artw

no we determined last year that the work/returns ratio is just not worth it for a club our size.

ambushman2j

is that all that was considered?, there's other elements to think about, the ability for individuals in the club to display their tanks to the general public, the betta show was a good event for people wanting to put their fish in competitions, of which the club should think about other types of fish showing competitions as well, I don't think there's enough (if any) ottawa fish competitions

Marc

Other factors:

The year that we did do the super-ex we had a lot of problems getting enough volunteers to do the work.   Someone has to be at the booth all the time including during the day on weekdays.  Most of our members work weekdays.

We spent a lot of money for equipment and supplies to setup the booth.  Although it's hard to calculate it I think it's safe to say that most of the money was not recovered thru new memberships or any other method.

we still have the black cloths we bought for the shelves, just in case anyone wants to change the barbeque into a toga party :)

Marc

I think the bowls are still kicking around somewhere too. :P

ambushman2j

well, I am not saying we nessessarily have to do superex, but what would be involved in setting up a fish show of some sort?

Pisidan

I agree with ambushman..we need something i think...alot of us are proud of our fish and wish for a way to display them...if something was setup i would gladly volunteer as much as possible!! Just my 2 cents !! ;)

ambushman2j

maybe a 1 day only event..how do fish shows normally work? anyone ever entered a fish in a fish show contest?.. I know the montreal club used to do stuff like that

ottawadiscus

How about OVAS organize a one day fish event for OVAS members?

We used to have bowl shows at each club meeting.  For this, members were asked to bring a fish or 2 to each meeting in a small container (hence the name "bowl" show).  Then a judge or judges appointed by OVAS would name a 1st place winner, 2nd place winner and 3rd place winner and hand out ribbons.

The bowl show had to be cancelled due to lack of participation.  Jody and I have lots of first and second place ribbons because we were the only two bringing fish.

Marc

If someone wants to organize a fish show I think the club would support it.  You'd have to come up with a plan of how the fish show would work,  sufficient volunteers, a budget.  With a good workable plan I'm sure the club could be convinced to put a bit of money into it.  (This is my personal opinion only)

The biggest impediment to club activities is and has always been getting volunteers to organize activities.  Those of us on the executive are kept busy organizing core club activities.  This leaves us little time to organize other activities.

So if someone wants to do a fish show, personally, I'm all for it.

Marc,

I think it's better to talk about this in our next meeting because most of us will be there.

there is no more meetings until sept tho..I am sure volenteers could be found for a 1 day event..the ex exhibit was different it was a 2 week event, there were volenteers, just not all the time..for a 1 day event it might be different, however..is there documentation on how exactly one of these types of shows should be run?

dpatte

CAOAC probably has recommendations about how to run a 1-day fish show.

The advantage of the superex is that we didnt have to pay for the space for the show, but if the club ran a show on its own it would have to pay for space, advertise, etc.

I used to think that it might be interesting to hold a fish show (perhaps in a separate room) but on the same day as the giant auction. Everyone that visited the auction could vote for 'people choice' winner.

ambushman2j

I agree that would be a good idea, cept the giant auction is in march..I suspect it would be safer for your "prize" fish to do this sometime in the late spring or early fall?  and has the club ever considered hosting 2 giant auctions a year?

gvv

Quote from: "ambushman2j"...  and has the club ever considered hosting 2 giant auctions a year?
Only one can be giant! :D
Or you will be unable to distinguish between them.
But seriously, it seems to me that this is not so easy. And also this event should be remembered.
Or we will come to the idea of weekly auctions

ambushman2j

well that's a little out of hand, but montreal has 2 giant auctions (tho they are by 2 clubs if I am not mistaken) crlca has 4 large auctions a year..
