For a week or so I could smell something odd and rather repulsive in my aquarium room.  Thought it was one of the fish that had lept from the tank and was stinking out the place.  No luck.  A couple of days ago I decided to prepare my auto feeders for use and when I removed the cover from one of them it was FULL of 1/4-1/2 inch very active maggots.  I just about tossed my supper when I got a concentrated whiff of them!  The container had been about half full of Tetramin crisps after its last use about three weeks ago.  These critters were not the conventional fly type maggot and they had reduced the food to a red liquid paste.  Anyone else experienced this??  BTW - I've cleaned the feeder hopper twice with concentrated dish soap and can't get the smell out of it.

Marx

so maggots are your new fish food?? lol..

dpatte

ewwww.

I had something like that happen to me over 20 years ago with brine shrimp eggs. I couldnt bear the thought of opening a tin of them for years after that.

id say - insure your foods are kept where they dont become the food of anything that might fly by. Close all food tins especially and remove food from feeders when not in use.

I can see the post now.... FS: Automatic Fish Feeder, works great!

Stevie

Try pouring baking soda into it Nelson and let it sit for a few days to get the smell out.  It should work!

- Marx: there's no way in hell I could close enough to those things to feed them to my fish!!
- Stevie: I'll try the baking soda suggestion - took a whiff if the feeder this morning and it's still pretty gross.
- Marc: "FS: Automatic Fish Feeder, works great- Requires Hazmat suit (optional)"
- Dave:  Good advice

Thanks for the feed-back all.

Yup this has happend to me as well approxamatly 5 monthes ago..

I found that if you're feeder is too close to you're water if there is bubles or a small spray, you're food will get moistend.

then the food won't come out any more, then the food get's weter and wetter, were it starts to rott..

Once decaying starts to happend evil bacteria sutch as maggets will appear.

lucky for me i caught mine in time no maggots woot!!!

yet still the smell is Horrid...

So place you'e food dispencer carfully...

I have a air curtain in the back of my tank and the bottom to create a swirl (movement of water).

Yet bubbles in back creat a small spray.

so i need to put my auto feerder in front were there is no spray to keep food dry.
