I just received a crayfish from a gentleman who needed to get rid of it as he was moving. He gave me a quick briefing on what to do with him but I was wondering if anyone else could gie me some more info on keeping him healthy.

From what I understand, they are escape artists; keep your tank as well covered as possible.

i kept crabs for a bit, and yes, they will climb up any wires pr plants you may have.
one day i found one of the craps dangling from my reptile cover on my 10 gallon. legs out ot the water and head int he water...was very amusing.

petshrimp.com has a crayfish forum - you can do a search there.  As a warning, I assume the same rules apply on the crayfish forum as the shrimp forum, that it is greatly frowned on if you ask questions without doing some research first.

I recomend a little garlic butter, and when putting them in a pot watch out for those claws the can really pinch, but your going to need more then one to make a good meal of them  ;D

I just did a search for crayfish forum and found these too

I once had one, but he ended up with some cichlids and tiger barbs, they ended up eating a few of his legs.  He might go after a Pleco.  at one point though he was with a leporinus fasciatus, and they seemed to pair up.  they kept the same hole with their backs to eachother guarding both entrances, that was pretty cool

I had the same  sort of idea but didn't want to sound :D but hey what about a nice day of ice fishing, bet he'd snag a nice pickerol :) Just kidding. Seriously though after Jan. 1st there's no more crayfish to be had at bait shops.......So guard him well.

The colour on him sounded beautiful in the original post.  Could you provide a pic or a link to an online photo (if and when you know his species)?

I had one with pirahna back in the day, he kept me thinking he was eaten everytime he shed his shell...until the pirahna learned he is soft when shedding...then...OWNED.

Yeah, I think I'm going to have to be careful with this one. He looks like he can easily crawl out of the tank. He's two years old and he's gonna stay by himself in a twenty gallon tank. He's interesting to watch. I can remember catching crayfish under rocks when I was a kid, now I have a big one in my aquarium. Who would have thought?
