Female or pseudo female? - new world cichlid

Here are some pictures of my two Green Terrors. One is totally submisive to the more colourful one. However I read something about some species where the smaller male will sometimes change to look like a female   
Does anyone know if These guys are known to do this?

im pretty sure the 1st pic is a Female and the 2nd is a male.
