when i got him i was told he was a loach but hes a catfish of some sort i think he's beautiful but i want to know what he is

Mseguin is right. except it is a Spotted Featherfin Cat

aren't they just classified as Synodontis eupterus "featherfin syno" ...I've only seen personal websites call them spotted.

Is there another variety planet catfish isn't listing?

They both fall under the same latin name as far as I know however on this website you can see the difference

juvies have swirls etc...adults have the spots

I would have to disagree with that some always have spots even as a juvenile
hence spotted.
You can see this on the website mentioned they show some pics of some small patterned ones and a small spotted one.
