Two questions:

1. Can you use tubes from CT? Was there today saw tubes rated at 6500k. They are labeled plants & aquariums.

2. Is there a value for used tubes from planted tanks? They are rated for 10k hours 6-9 months is way less than that. Could they be used for goldfish, chicild, or plastic only tanks?

1. Yes.  There is nothing special about "Aquarium bulbs".

2. Yes.  If you are just looking at illumination, you can easily use "old" bulbs.  Just be aware that the light spectrum changes over time and may favour algae a bit more.

I have 2 tubes from CT on my 55. I do not like the Aquarium/Plant bulb from Sylvania as it is pinkish to our eye. I switched to GE Daylight and get more lumens, just a good plant growth and a better looking tank.

Can you use CT fixtures then?

You can use any bulb.  Try to stay above 4,100K temp wise (cool white) and the plants will do just fine

But what about the CT fixtures?

Dan - please re-read the answers to your questions. Yes, you can use Canadian Tire fluorescent light tubes at that rating.

But what about the CT fixtures?
I wouldn't use the fixtures unless you are sure they are moisture resistant.

There is nothing wrong using CT fixtures!!!
However, most of these fixture will have a warning
stating not to be used at wet locations and are not
moist resistant, but if you are planning on hanging them
at least 10''inches of the tank/water I think you will be Ok.
keep in mind the K rating on the lamps........for you plants/fish needs.
I find the Phillips extra Day light packs a good punch
for you buck when it comes to lighting.
cheers. ;)

I know I was asking about the light fixtures themselves!  8)

If you use the fixtures over glass then you would be OK. My 2 x 29s are both glass tops and the fixtures just sit on top. They are not sealed end caps. This whole aquarium business is a risk mixing electricity & water. Just thinking if they work it would be much cheaper. My light tubes cost way to much...  >:(

Q. #3. Can you use MH light bulbs from lighting stores. I saw the bulbs today also. Do they have K ratings or just wattage for intensity?
