If I have a blue crayfish, how can I tell what kind it is?  What's the difference between a Procambarus alleni and a Cherax sp.?  Everything I see on google looks the same.

ho lord
you put your finger in a big thing :)
Always take care of google , google is your friend but can also be you nasty ennemi.

people label photo with what they want.
if you want do this kind of research only study pic from reputable site with the name of a reputable scientis or hobbyist on it.
and even there , mistake can be introduce.

i am far away from those monster , huge (in my oopinion) crayfish....
if i check seriously i will probably be able to see the difference , i know what to look but as of today i am only concentrate myself on dwarf crayfich as Cambarellus genus who dont eat plant and can be put in community tank (my next conference will be on thoose guy).

i am breeding actually 5 of those guy.

to come back to your question you better go ask there : http://www.petshrimp.com/discussions/viewforum.php?f=3

I figured I was asking a difficult question :)  I want to know so I can eventually get a mate for the one I have.  I'll see what I can find on petshrimp.
