Hi,

I've been keeping 3 freshwater stingrays (Potamotrygon reticulatus) for a year now and wanted to share a bit of my experience. They were purchased as small pups form Big Al's and have grown into about 14 inch long fish (diameter of about 9 inches) and are still growing. It has been a challenge with a lot of water changes and these guys (actually 1 male 2 female ) are very fussy eaters but we manage. They have eaten earthworms from my hand when submersed and I hope to train them to come to the top to take food - time will tell. I really enjoy watching them hover across the bottom plants and wood, and climb the aquarium walls. At times the even swim through the water. Brown fish are beautiful.

I chose the Reticulated ray also called a "teacup ray" as they are one of the smaller rays and reasonably priced however not the easiest to keep. I have always been aware of the sting and remain very attentive when cleaning the tank, but have never witnessed even the slightest bit of aggressiveness. I keep them in a 125 gallon tank, running 2 fluval 405 with 2 x 300 watt external heaters. They have one other tank mate at this time, an African Brown Knife. Here are some recent pics.

Very nice looking stingrays, it is nice to see someone out there who appreciates the beauty of the ugly brown fish, not all the fish can be colourful, good for you! :)  It is also nice to see them housed in something akin to a natural setting, I am sure they are very happy fish.

Thanks for sharing.  I agree, brown fish are beautiful. :)  I love to watch stingrays move, it is very poetic.  They are mesmerizing.

I have always wanted rays.  I had thought about something with a huge surface area for their needs.  Ahh so many wanted tanks and so little room for them lol.  Very nice setup!!

PaleoFishGirl

That looks very cool, nice setup! Thanks for sharing a little bit about your wonderful fishes.  Stingrays might be tricky to keep but they are well worth the efforts!

Beautiful!!!  I love rays, I think they are gorgeous and so graceful.

Congrats on taking such good care of them, and thank you so much for sharing! :)

Hi,

In my tank the Potamotrygon Reticulatus should reach about a 12 - 14 inches in diameter .

I am working on a Stingray video...

Thanks to all for having a look.
