you do`nt mention the aquarium`s gallons....  I built a very attractive stand for a community tank , all form wood, two doors and two shelves inside..
The tank was 36"long , 18" high x 16" deep !....The legs were
hard maple,  the top was hardwood framed, all parts glued and screwed ,  plus a 1/4 " plywood wrapped around , nailed and glued.....    for the top table I used a solid pine board nailed and glued ...   with some moulding trim around the outside top ... the wide pine boards are available at home depot, reasonable , in various widths...  ( the boards are all narrow strips glued into a big board)  I`ll be glad to mail you a detailed plan, its very easy to build, BUT, you must make everything level !, and square !,,,

If you know of a welding place, I have some easy plans for him to use !...you can pickup some scrap angle at any scrap yard..

If your not good with wood, you can buy steel angle perferated with holes, ( phone a steel roofer, for angle steel) you can cut the stuff up to required lenghts with a hand held grinder (wear safety glasses !) and you bolt everything together, make sure all are the same lenght, and level !.  Glad to mail you some plans....  Go to a used steel shelving place, or phone used office equipment place, ask for steel shelving racks..  depending again on the weight of your tank.
You would really need at least , inch and a half x inch and a half angle...  phone scrap yards....  if the bolts are a little rusted, use a "nut loosner " sold at Can.tire. or grind the bolts off !.        I would be pleased to help if you require !... sincerely John P. (nickie)

Check out  http://www.fishandtips.com

They have a diy stand where you enter the dimensions of your tank and it you get the basic steps of how to  frame and build a stand. It is very solid because is uses 4"x4" posts (as opposed to other diy plans which use 2"x4"). This will form the frame of my future new stand as I plan to embellish this plan so it ends up being a furniture piece.

Very well done Art, saw the silicone on the corner joint, good idea.

If your not to sure of your skill and the stand is for the basement, you can stop at CT and get their WorkBench legs.

Personal note: Thank you Art for the piece of wood, it fit without a cut. :)

Hello !.. no this old man did`nt keel over, and forget your request  for a copy of my receipt of $34.83, for two beef hearts.... as I had mentioned , the other scanner being 12 years old gave-up on me  !....purchased a new scanner , the one that can also scan 35mm slides, and print them,  (staples $149.00)  But I hav`nt  connected the thing up yet !,,,  this week I hope !... I just do`nt  want you to think I was fibbing about the receipts !...John (nickie)

Under the vynal hood of a large tank theres a clear thin glass, and one inch above it is the neon light, does the glass
deter any of the good rays from reaching the aquarium plants ?....
