My nitrate level is pretty much zero as well. Is this why I have a minor algae problem I can't seem to solve??

Could be, as the plants need nitrate to grow, and if they don't have it, they can't use the other ferts in the water, while algae will.

Minor enough that I'm not really worried  about it overtaking the tank but annoying enough that I want it gone. I believe that it is brush algae growing mostly on driftwood and older mature plants. Of course I have the green stuff on the glass and whatnot, but that doesn't bother me. It's the brush algae that is most bothersome.
