has anyone ever tried or considered LED lighting? you'd have to construct a pretty impressive DYI lighting board for it, but as they become more popular in flashlights and Xmas lighting they shouldnt be too hard to come across....

there are companies making very nice LED fixtures (like the Solaris ones). One of the issues is the price of those units.  A lot of folks have also included DYI LED setups over their tanks.  Do some googling and you will find them.

I've thought the same thing. How about those outdoor Christmas LED lights in the plastic tubing?

some people are using them. The blue LEDs make for nice night/lunar lights.

i've been considering lunar lights - it'll be about the only chance for me to get a decent view of my khuli in action! Do the blue LEDs cause any distress to diurnal fishes?

They don't, at least not in my tanks. I've purchased a very nice submersible 36" blue LED fixture from one of the members for $25. I can imagine that if you were to buy a new one, it wouldn't be more than double what I paid. I've personally seen some nice ones on usedottawa.

I've actually gone with a single moontube from Fishbowl Innovations. I found the price and results pretty good.
