New 90 gallon - cracked plastic on base????

I picked up a brand new 90 gallon today from BigAls in Kanata.  We looked the silicone seams over and the glass for cracks but not the bottom.  The bottom plastic that goes all around the bottom of the tank has a verticle crack straight down in the middle.

I bought this to replace a tank with bad silicone.

Is this safe or should I ask them to exchange it?  Any issues with doing so?  I've never returned a tank before and its like $25 in gas to get there and back.

This sucks  :'(

Oh no!!  I am so sorry to hear that!  I think you and I are going through the same sort of thing... crapola!  :-\

I would return it for sure!!!  Where do you live though?  Maybe someone could help you out..If you don't mind waiting until next week, I drive around a lot!! I'm sure I could help you out.
So sorry about that!

Since it is a new tank I would replace it. Sucks, but what's the point of buying new if it is not mint. Gas got cheaper anyway ...
be aware of the green side

Thats nice of you - i was just venting I guess.  I live and work in Rockland and its Big Als in Kanata.  I guess I'll call first.  See what others advice and experience with returning tanks is too.

Its a clean completely vertical crack.  I wish I had taken more time to inspect.  I felt like I was annoying the guy (like I tend to do haha) spending too much time.  I just didn't want a repeat of what I"m going through now having to take down a tank, rearrange and put up a new one.

Yah thankfully gas did get cheaper lol.  1/2 price savings there.  I guess even with gas a new tank is worth peace of mind.

You can always check if BA Innes would be willing to do the exchange - either way call a make sure they have a replacement in stock first.

Are you sure it's a crack and not a seam. I've seen many with a seam midway along the long dimension. Either way, if it's a hardship doing an exchange, I wouldn't worry about it; all the pressure on that trim piece is straight down and it should be held in place by all four side glass panels.

KLKelly

I noticed it from the inside and actually investigated it thinking it was a seem but it was light shining through the crack.  So I know its a crack.  I'm just wondering if its reflective of handling maybe.  I guess my fear is that I'm replacing a tank that I have a fear is faulty and the purpose of this expenditure was to get a tank with peace of mind.  I would prefer an exchange but we will see what they say.  I've never exchanged a tank and I don't want a hassle if I do : (

I hope they will exchange it, but the issue of damage after sale or during transport may come up. Try some negotiating if thats the case. I've repaired lots of tanks with a bottom crack. Even though its better to get a new tank, a fixed tank is just as strong. You'd need a piece of glass to fit over the bottom piece. You can cut out the bottom silicone , rebead with new silicone, add the piece of glass right over the cracked piece, and then another bead of silicone. You'll never see it as it will be covered by substrate. PM me if you decide to go with the repair. We're almost neighbours, I'm in Cumberland.

Mark that is very cool of you.  I hope they don't give me a hard time and don't expect one.  The damaged in transit was on my mind.  That would be a good way out and hope they don't go this route.  This tank needed to be perfect.  I have my old 90G in the basement unused.  It was unlevel for a year and torn down and replaced with this 54 gallon again for peace of mind.  We built a brand new stand for it that would hold a tank three times it size and check it often to make sure its still perfectly level. I am a worry wart.  I went with a brand new tank just to be "sure".  After the tank resealing work shop from a few years ago and Bus Drivers blowout I don't want my pets or all that water on the floor.

I'm sure its fine and cosmetic but I would prefer a perfect tank. I hope they don't give me a hard time.  I'm phoning now and will update my thread.  I'm sure its cosmetic but I wanted a perfect tank.  I'm sure the tank they are in now would last for years I just don't think it is worth the risk.

We shall see.  :)

KLKelly

I really think it is only cosmetic.  you can't even tell there is a crack there unless you feel it or see it from the inside.  I'm sure its safe to use.  Who knows....  I do worry to much but its just frustrating that its not perfect.
