Hi Elk!

Silica sand is pool filter sand. In fact I do believe that most sand is silica. At any rate I would recommend the PFS. I picked up 50 lbs last week for about 8 bucks at a pool store and while it is slightly more expensive than the price you quote at Merkley's, I would venture to guess that it is not cleaned at all and since PFS come mostly clean, the extra 2 bucks is well worth the 6 hours you will spend cleaning 80 lbs of sand. I tried cleaning general purpose sand. Learn from my futility, purchase the cleanest substrate you can, you won't regret it.
