We recently bought a new extension cord and we noticed on the box after we got it home that it's not for aquarium use. Is that just because of the water hazard or because it wouldn't be powerful enough to run the equipment?

I doubt it is power related, unless you are planning to connect a 5kW light fixture with it. Most of the equipment (filer, power head) you use is low power, the heater and lights are somewhat in the medium range (50-200W) - of course it can be higher if you have a huge tank or fancy equipment, or just many tanks ....
The manufacturer just wants to be covered for the eventuality that someone gets fried because he throws that power cord into his tank. Unless you do that and avoid to spill major amounts of water over all your cables, power bar, outlets, etc ... you will be fine to use the new cord. :)

Definitely the legal thing. Also your fish tank is running 24x7 depending how the testing was conducted it may not have assumed running 24x7. The other issue they are worried about is moisture.

They are just protecting themselves from a lawsuit....

I just want to know why they didn't put the power bar on the other end of the extension cord if they only needed one socket and extra length......

but hey, that's what flip-flops are for!
